A natural disaster

My mom went away for the weekend.
Without her breathing down my neck I had the kitchen to myself! Whooopee!!

So Saturday night's menu was quite a treat:
~ Stuffed Portabello Mushrooms
~ Mesclun Salad with Balsamic Vinaigrette
~ Roast Chicken with Pesto, Sage and Onion
~ Walnut Bread
~ Chocolate Volcano with Vanilla Ice Cream

The stuffed mushrooms and chicken turned out good (from improvised recipes at that!)

The Walnut Bread however, had a rather cakey texture and taste. That's one really confused recipe. Found it online, but I wouldn't make it again. Some garlic and herb butter saved it.

Finally, the Chocolate Volcanoes.
They looked promising when they first came out from the oven. But alas, they erupted before time.

The recipe is taken from Nigella's website for Molten Chocolate Babycakes.

I think the baking time should be longer than stated: 10-12 minutes. I baked them for 11 minutes but they cracked and spilled their 'lava' when tipped out from the tin. Bummer.

They tasted yummerlicious though, served warm (out of the oven) with vanilla ice cream. Would definitely make this again. And get it right too!

D, LY, dad, bro and me were stuffed silly.

The whole circus ended with a massive clean up.
I had to destroy all evidence of culinary activity before mom got home the next day. Tee hee!

but but but... they're SUPPOSED to erupt! molten chocolate babycakes, YUMMMM!!! however, if you use ramekins instead of a muffin tray, you can tip them out more neatly, since individually controlled. :)

Yeah! must buy them ramekins.
Couldn't find them though! :)
Until I try this again, there's TSB Bangsar's kick ass chocolate volcano!
Go try it with Spot!

i think it IS supposed to erupt the moment you "uncase" it, but i guess if you like it to break only when the guests cut their spoons into it, well i guess yes, bake longer :) and thanks for the tip on TSB!

ramekins are a bitch to find in KL! i looked everywhere, finally got some small ovensafe glass bowls from Ikea (NOT ramekins, and slightly smaller). THEN i saw that Hock Choon supermarket (Jln Ampang), has it upstairs in the household department. so now you know where to get them!

we took a photo of one of the babycakes the last time she made some. see here... on page 2 http://groups.msn.com/NigellaForumMembers/kcsalbum.msnw?Page=1

oh btw, cold storage is selling Lurpak butter at RM5 a block for these few days only!
